Older houses near downtown need careful cleaning

Tarpon Springs has some of the oldest neighborhoods in Pinellas County. Around downtown and Spring Bayou, a lot of the houses are wood frame, with wide porches and old pine floors. People who own these houses usually care about them a great deal. They want the floors cleaned without a flood of water, and the old trim wiped down gently instead of scrubbed raw. Waterfront homes pick up salt and sand

Water runs all through Tarpon Springs. The Gulf is on the west side, and the Anclote River and several bayous reach right into town. Plenty of homes back onto a bayou or a canal. The wind off the water carries salt, and it comes inside every time a sliding door is left open. It dries into a dull, hazy film on the inside of glass doors and on the furniture nearest to them.

Sand is the other problem near the water. It comes in on shoes from Fred Howard Park, and on the dogs after a walk along the river. It settles deep in sliding door tracks and along the grout lines in tile floors. Left there, it scratches the floor a little more with every step. A track full of sand also makes the door drag and stick.

Then there is the damp. Along the water, summer air stays heavy for months, and a closed bathroom or a closet on an outside wall can grow mildew quickly. We look for it in shower grout and on the ceiling over the tub. Caught on a regular visit, it wipes away. Left for a whole season, it takes real scrubbing, and some of the stains may not come out.

Newer concrete homes still collect dust and pollen

Farther east, out toward Lake Tarpon, the houses are mostly newer. Many are concrete block with tile floors and screened lanais. They stand up to the weather better than the old wood houses do, but many of them are busy homes with kids and dogs. Tile shows every footprint and paw print. In spring, yellow oak pollen drifts in and settles on counters and floors near every open door.
