Clearwater has old houses and newer ones

The houses here vary a lot, and each kind gets dirty in its own way. Harbor Oaks, on the bluff just south of downtown, has some of the oldest homes in the city. They have wood floors and a lot of painted trim. Much of the rest of the city is concrete block ranch houses built in the middle of the last century. Out in Countryside the homes are newer and larger, and plenty of them have a screened pool out back.

Old wood floors want a damp mop, never a soaking, and all that trim holds dust on every ledge. Block houses from that era often have tile floors, and the grout lines hold grime until someone scrubs them by hand. In the bigger Countryside homes, the pool brings its own mess. Wet feet track pool water across the floors all summer, and the track of the sliding glass door fills with grit and leaves.

A house that has gone a season without a real cleaning usually needs a deep clean to catch up. That means the grout and the tops of the cabinets get done by hand. After that, a weekly or biweekly visit keeps it from sliding back. Which one makes sense depends on who lives there, and whether a dog or a pool is part of the picture. Beach sand and salt air come indoors

Clearwater Beach and Sand Key sit on barrier islands across the harbor, and Island Estates is built along canals just off the causeway. Much of the housing out there is condos, from small low-rise buildings to towers on the sand. Sand does not stay at the beach. It comes in on feet and beach bags, settles into the corners and grinds into the carpet every time someone walks across it.

Salt air is the other problem, and homes along the harbor on the mainland side get it too. It leaves a sticky film on windows and glass tables, and a quick wipe just smears it around. Salt also pulls water out of the air, so the film stays tacky and catches dust faster than clean glass does. On a condo balcony, the sliding door and its frame usually take the worst of it.

Then there is the humidity. From late spring into fall the air stays wet, and most summer afternoons bring a thunderstorm. Bathrooms that never fully dry grow mildew in the grout and along the bottom of the shower door. Air conditioning vents pick up dust that turns dark and sticky in the damp. Keeping after those spots on a regular schedule is much easier than scrubbing them out once they set in.
