A deep clean reaches what dusting misses

A regular visit keeps a clean house clean. A deep clean goes after the layer underneath, the build-up that collects for months where a quick wipe never reaches. Think of the top edge of every baseboard and both sides of each ceiling fan blade. Then there are the cabinet fronts beside the stove, where cooking grease settles, and the grout lines in the shower. We get to each of those by hand, with a cloth or a brush, instead of passing over them.

The order matters more than most people expect. We start high, with the fan blades and the tops of the kitchen cabinets. Whatever comes off up there drifts down, so counters get wiped after that and floors come last. Dry dusting happens before anything gets wet, because damp dust smears into a gray paste. In the kitchen and bathrooms, cleaner goes on early and sits while we work in another room. That gives grease and soap scum time to loosen, so they wipe off instead of getting ground in.

You can check the work with a finger. Run it along the top of a baseboard or the leading edge of a fan blade and it should come back clean. Grout lines should look close to their original color, not like dark stripes between clean tiles. When a step gets skipped, it shows fast. Dust left on a fan blade gets thrown across the room the first time you switch it on, and it lands on the counters you just paid to have cleaned.

Florida humidity turns dust into grime

Dust in a dry climate sits loose on a surface and wipes off with a cloth. Here the air stays damp for most of the year, so dust soaks up moisture and starts to stick. In a kitchen it mixes with cooking grease into a tacky film on the range hood and the top of the refrigerator. A dry duster only pushes that film around. It needs a degreaser and a stack of clean cloths, swapped out as they load up.

Bathrooms feel it most. Mildew starts in the grout and along the caulk line where the tub meets the wall. Left alone, it climbs onto the ceiling above the shower. It also grows in the tracks of sliding glass doors, where water from summer storms sits in the corners. Mildew has to be scrubbed out of grout, because bleach alone takes away the color and leaves the growth underneath. When a caulk line has gone black all the way through, no cleaning will fix it, and we will tell you so.

Air conditioning runs most of the year here, and the big return vent pulls dust toward it all day. The smaller vents on the ceiling collect a gray fuzz too, and some of it blows back into the room when the system kicks on. Spring adds oak pollen, a yellow film that settles on window sills and anything near a door. We wipe every vent cover on a deep clean. The sills get dusted before they get washed, so the pollen does not turn to mud.

Terrazzo floors and jalousie windows need care

Much of the housing in Pinellas Park is concrete block ranch homes with stucco outside. Many have terrazzo floors, sometimes still hidden under carpet or tile. Terrazzo is chips of marble set in cement, and it does not like acid. Vinegar and acidic bathroom cleaners etch it. The etched spots look dull when light comes across the floor. On a deep clean we use a neutral cleaner on terrazzo, then mop it again with clean water so no film is left to trap dirt.

Many of these homes also have a Florida room with jalousie windows. Those are the windows with rows of glass slats that crank open. Each slat has two faces and two edges, and the crank and the clips hold grit and dead bugs. Wiping a jalousie while it is closed misses most of the glass. We crank them open and wipe each slat on both sides. Then the hardware gets brushed out. The screens get a vacuum too, since that is where the pollen collects.

Older houses have surfaces that need a lighter touch. Popcorn ceilings are common in homes of this age. They turn soft when wet and can come down in patches, so we take cobwebs off them with a dry brush, never a damp cloth. Pinellas Park also has a lot of manufactured homes. The walls there are often vinyl-covered panels with thin strips over the seams, and dirt lines up along those strips. A soft cloth and a mild cleaner take it off without scuffing the vinyl.

Dogs and kids leave dirt down low

In a house with dogs, hair ends up in every corner a quick vacuum misses. It rolls up against the baseboards and packs into the return vent. The rest drifts under the couch and the beds. Many dog homes have a gray line along the wall where a dog rubs past every day. The bottom half of the sliding door carries nose prints. We work low on a deep clean, with a brush along the edges and a wipe on every surface a dog can reach.

Kids leave a different trail, mostly at the height of a small hand. Light switches and the lower cabinet handles get sticky, and the sticky spots hold dust. Crumbs end up in the gap beside the stove and in the tracks of kitchen drawers. None of that comes off with one pass of a dry cloth. We wipe switch plates and handles with a damp cloth, then dry them so they do not streak. Where a piece of furniture can be moved safely, we move it and clean the floor behind it.

Customers notice the difference when they walk in. Ron Kroll has had Terry, the owner, cleaning for him for years. "He finds dirt I didn't even know I had," he wrote on Google. That dirt usually sits low along the walls or high on the fan blades, where nobody looks day to day. Getting it out the first time is the hard part, and keeping it out after that takes far less work.

Some homes need a deep clean first

Deep cleans make the most sense when regular wiping stops making a difference. That usually means a house that has gone months without a professional clean, or a home where someone has been sick. It also fits before family flies in for the holidays, or after a summer of beach sand and wet shoes. John Krebs had us clean while his wife was out of town. A deep clean takes longer than a regular visit, because every surface gets handled, including the ones nobody sees. It goes faster when counters and floors are clear. Pick up toys and loose papers before we arrive, and we can spend the time on grout and baseboards instead of moving clutter.
