Oak pollen gets into Safety Harbor homes

Safety Harbor is a town of big live oaks, and many of its older streets sit under a full canopy. The shade is much of the reason people want to live here. Those trees are also always dropping something on the roof and the yard. In spring it is a fine yellow-green pollen. It rides in on shoes and on the dog, then settles on every flat surface in the house.

Pollen dust is light, so a quick dry wipe tends to push it around instead of picking it up. On a humid day it turns sticky and holds onto the surface. Leave it a few weeks and the ceiling fan blades collect a thick gray layer. Switch the fan on and that dust spreads across the room. The blinds and sills near the doors fill up the same way, and so do the baseboards in the front rooms.

So we clean from the top of each room down. Fan blades and the tops of door frames come first, then blinds and sills. The floors come last, so nothing lands on a floor we already cleaned. Older Safety Harbor houses need careful cleaning

Safety Harbor grew up around its mineral springs and the spa that still stands near the bay. The streets close to Main Street still have wood-frame cottages and bungalows, some with their original floors and trim. Farther out you find block ranch houses from the middle of the last century, and past those are newer subdivisions with bigger floor plans. Each kind of house needs a slightly different approach.

Old hardwood is the surface we watch most closely. A mop that is too wet pushes water into the seams between boards. Over time the boards curl up at the edges and the finish turns cloudy. Older tile tends to have wider grout lines that hold onto dirt. Old trim with many layers of paint can chip if it is scrubbed hard. So we ask what the floors and counters are made of before we start.

That is where mildew starts, and you usually smell it before you see it.

Mildew shows up first as a dark film along the grout lines and the caulk at the bottom of the shower. Caught early, it comes off with regular cleaning. Left for a season, it works into the caulk and stains it. The air vent covers in the ceiling start to show dark spots too. By then it takes a much longer scrub, and some stains never fully come out.

The fix is to stay ahead of it. A deep clean gets the bathrooms and kitchen back to a clean starting point. After that, a standard visit every week or every other week keeps the damp spots from building up again.
