What an older Largo house needs

Much of Largo was built out decades ago, and you can see it on the side streets off Missouri Avenue and East Bay Drive. The usual house is a single-story concrete block ranch with a Florida room out back. Pull up the carpet in plenty of them and the original terrazzo floor is still underneath. Mixed in are condo buildings and a large number of manufactured home communities, where many residents are retirees who want help with the heavier work.

Older houses hold dirt in places a newer one does not. Jalousie windows and old aluminum sliders have tracks that fill with grit and dead bugs. Terrazzo looks fine after a quick mop, but acidic bathroom sprays leave it dull and cloudy over time. Popcorn ceilings catch cobwebs in the corners. Ceiling fans run most of the year here, and their blades carry a gray layer that drops onto everything below when someone switches them on.

So in an older Largo home we work from the top down. Fans and vent grilles come first, because whatever is on them ends up on the floor. Baseboards and door frames get wiped by hand, and terrazzo and tile get a gentle cleaner that will not etch the surface. Humid summers put mildew in Largo bathrooms

Most of Largo sits back from the water. The whole county sits between the Gulf and Tampa Bay, though, so the air stays wet from spring into fall. Storms roll through on most summer afternoons. Houses stay closed up with the air conditioning running, and the moisture inside has to settle somewhere. It shows up first in bathrooms without a strong exhaust fan and on vent grilles where cold air meets warm air.

Mildew starts as a dark line along the bottom of a shower door and in the grout nearest the drain. Caught early, it wipes off. Left for a season, it gets into the grout and the caulk and becomes much harder to remove. The black specks on the ceiling around an AC vent are often the same problem. They come back quickly if nobody cleans past the grille itself.

Spring brings a different mess. Oak pollen drifts in for weeks and leaves a yellow film on window sills and the tops of furniture. Lovebugs show up in late spring and again in early fall, and the ones that get inside end up in light fixtures. Sandy soil comes in on shoes and dog paws all year. A weekly or biweekly visit stays ahead of it, where a cleaning once a season means starting over every time.

Largo has a lot of rental housing, from apartment complexes on the main roads to condos and older houses that owners lease out. When a tenant moves out, the place needs more than a weekly wipe-down. Cabinets and drawers get cleaned inside, and the grime in the slider tracks and along the baseboards finally comes out. Heather Wickliff had Terry clean the apartment she and her husband left, and wrote: "He made the apartment look like no one ever lived there."
