East Lake homes gather dust up high

East Lake was built mostly as planned subdivisions on the east side of Lake Tarpon. Many are gated, and several are built around golf courses. Most houses are concrete block with stucco, and plenty of them are two stories with a tall living room ceiling. That height looks great from the couch. It also puts a lot of dust in places a normal duster never reaches, and it can sit there for years.

Many of these houses have plant shelves, the long ledges that sit high on a wall above the doorways. Ceiling fans run most of the year here. When the ledges and blades get skipped, the dust does not stay up there. A fan on high throws it across the room, and it lands on floors that were just mopped. On tile, the grout lines turn gray as that dirt gets pushed into them.

We clean these houses from the top down. Fan blades and high ledges we can reach safely come first. Floors come last, so nothing drops onto clean tile. Pine pollen and damp air get inside

Brooker Creek Preserve sits on the eastern side of East Lake, and big pines and oaks stand over a lot of the neighborhoods. Every spring those trees drop pollen, and it coats cars and pool cages in a yellow film. Screens stop bugs, but they do not stop pollen. It drifts across the lanai and comes indoors every time a sliding door opens.

Summer brings the other problem, which is damp air. Storms roll through on many afternoons, and the air stays heavy long after the rain stops. Bathrooms dry slowly in that air, so mildew starts in the shower grout and along the caulk line of the tub. It can also show up as dark specks on the ceiling above a shower or on the air vent covers. Glass shower doors pick up white water spots on top of that.

Left alone, pollen gets ground into carpet and settles into curtains and fabric couches. Mildew sinks deeper into grout and caulk, and it gets harder to lift every month it sits. We also clean at move-out time. When a house goes on the market or a tenant leaves, it has to look empty and fresh for the next walk-through.
